In the Taiyuan period of the Jin Dynasty, a fisherman from Wuling made a living by fishing. As he was following the river, he forgot the distance of the road. Suddenly, he encountered a peach orchard, which was several hundred steps along the riverbank. There were no other trees, and the grass was fresh and beautiful, with petals falling in profusion. The fisherman was very surprised. He continued to walk forward, wanting to explore the orchard. The orchard ended at the source of the river, and he then reached a mountain with a cave, as if there was light coming from it. He left his boat and entered from the cave. At first, it was very narrow, just wide enough for a person to pass through. After walking for several dozen steps, it suddenly opened up. The land was flat and spacious, with houses that looked neat and tidy, and there were good fields, beautiful ponds, mulberry trees, and bamboo. The paths were crisscrossed, and the sounds of chickens and dogs could be heard. Among them, people came and went to plant and work, and both men and women dressed like people from outside. The old and the young were all happy and contented.
When they saw the fisherman, they were greatly surprised and asked where he came from. He answered all their questions. They then invited him to return home and prepared wine and killed chickens for food. When the people in the village heard about this man, they all came to inquire. They said that their ancestors had fled the chaos of the Qin Dynasty and led their families and villagers to this secluded place, and they had never gone out since then, so they had been separated from the outside world. They asked what era it was now, and they did not even know about the Han Dynasty, let alone the Wei and Jin Dynasties. The fisherman told them about what he had heard, and everyone sighed with regret. The others also invited him to their homes, and they all brought out wine and food. After staying for several days, he left. The people there said, “It is not something that can be told to outsiders.”
After leaving, he found his boat and followed the path he had taken, marking it everywhere. When he arrived in the county, he went to the magistrate and told him about it. The magistrate sent people to follow him and find the path he had marked, but they got lost and could not find the way again. Liu Zijie, a nobleman from Nanyang, heard about it and was eager to go there. However, he did not succeed and later died of illness. After that, no one asked about it anymore.
